Pervasive Demand Avoidance

« Back to Glossary Index

Pervasive demand avoidance is an obsessive behavioral pattern, often associated with autism, to avoid any perceived request (routine tasks or desired activities), disrupting daily life. They might use outward-seeming social tactics like charm, distraction, or manipulation to avoid complying with requests. Pressure to avoid demands can trigger anxiety and lead to emotional outbursts or meltdowns. Pervasive demand avoidance shows a strong desire to be in control of situations and resist any perceived attempts to dictate actions. A related behavior, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), is when they become socially manipulative to evade expectations
