Perception

« Back to Glossary Index

Perception is the result when the brain processes/communicates sensation to the body. Sensation and perception are different but strongly associated processes. A person might not perceive the ticking of an analog clock in a classroom if engaged in conversation with classmates or listening to the professor. Also see Sensory Adaptation and Sensory Perception. Perception varies depending on a person’s experiences, beliefs, and motivations. Its stages are:

  • Stimulation: Senses take in stimuli
  • Organization: Brain receives/organizes sensory information
  • Interpretation: Past experiences guide how brain reacts to sensory stimuli
  • Memory: Experiences are recorded and stored for future use
  • Recall: Past memories are used to understand new stimuli
