Parieto-Insular-Vestibular Cortex (PIVC):

« Back to Glossary Index

Parieto-insular-vestibular cortex (PIVC) is an inter-connected brain region that controls balance/equilibrium in the vestibular system. This multisensory PICV integrates information from the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems to process head motion in space, visual target motion, neck twist, passive whole-body rotation, and trunk rotation. The PIVC plays a key role in bodily awareness, cognition, perception of gravity, and control of eye movements, posture, and balance. Injury to the PIVC can cause an abnormal gait, extremity weakness, imbalance, and obesity.
