Other-Derogation:

« Back to Glossary Index

Other-derogation, also known as intergroup/outgroup derogation, is a social phenomenon of viewing/treating members of a group one doesn’t belong to (outgroup) in a negative or dismissive manner, often stemming from an inherent bias (in-group favoritism). Other-derogation can lead to negative stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against those perceived as outsiders, escalating intergroup tensions and conflicts, like preferring negative thoughts/information about the outgroup and using derogatory language or stereotypes when discussing them.
