Occipital Lobe:

« Back to Glossary Index

The occipital lobe identifies, processes, interprets, and stores visual data and routes to other parts of the brain. This includes color, motion, and orientation data, object and facial recognition, depth and distance perception, and visual world mapping. It is one of three main areas located in the cerebrum’s front lobe. The occipital lobe is present in both the brain’s left and right hemispheres and is one of four interconnected, specialized lobes. The others are frontal, parietal, and temporal, each responsible for processing different types of information.
