Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD):

« Back to Glossary Index

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), also called Anankastic (compulsory) PD that’s one of 10 personality disorders, is characterized by extreme perfectionism, including excessive preoccupation with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules. Yet, this level of perfectionism prevents task completion and comes at the expense of leisure and relationships. A person with OCPD is  cautious, doubting, rigid, controlling, humorless, and miserly. Their underlying anxiety stems from their perceived lack of control over a world that eludes their understanding. The more they try to exert control, the more out of control they feel. As a consequence, they have low tolerance for complexity or nuance, seeing the world as either all good or all bad. Relationships are often strained by unreasonable and inflexible demands.
