Object Constancy/Inconstancy:

« Back to Glossary Index

Object constancy and inconstancy are fundamental psychological concepts in object relations theory. They describe the ability/inability to maintain stable, integrated emotional bonds with others (objects), especially in their absence or when they’ve done something frustrating or hurtful. In healthy development, object constancy reflects when the infant learns to separate from caregivers. As infants experience temporary separations, they gradually feel secure and trust in their caregiver when they can’t see them. Object constancy enables individuals to:

  • Maintain positive feelings even when upset with someone
  • Foster trust and security in relationships, even when caregivers are absent
  • Cope with conflict without feeling abandoned or fearing loss of the relationship
