Nucleus Accumbens:

« Back to Glossary Index

The nucleus accumbens, located in the ventral striatum, is the brain’s “pleasure center.” It’s primarily involved in the brain’s reward system, regulating motivated behaviors and linking emotional responses to actions involved in eating, sex, and social interaction. Dopamine is the key neurotransmitter, with increased dopamine levels associated with rewarding experiences. The nucleus accumbens’ shell is associated with the limbic system and its core with motor functions. Dysregulation is linked to addiction (due to its response to psychoactive drugs), depression, anxiety, and (OCD).
