Normal:

« Back to Glossary Index

Normal, in the context of neurodivergence, is not a valid, neutral, unbiased, sensitive, or acceptable term, but a subjective, highly variable concept based on outdated ideas of how to be, look, act, think. As opposite to abnormal, it pathologizes difference and holds people back from their best potential. Average is a statistical description—normal is a value statement. More neutral words are common, typical, or compared to the rest of the population.
