Nonbinary Gender Identity:

« Back to Glossary Index

Nonbinary gender identity, also called NB or ENBY, describes people who don’t identify exclusively as male or female. It’s an umbrella term for gender identities that fall outside of the gender binary system: agender, bisexual, genderfluid, genderqueer, or bigender. Nonbinary people may identify as male, female, neither, or somewhere in between. Their gender identity may also feel fluid, changing over time. Nonbinary people may express their gender in different ways, such as choosing androgynous clothing or dressing more masculine or feminine on different days. Some, but not all, nonbinary people may undergo medical procedures to make their bodies more congruent with their gender identity. Most transgender and intersex people are not nonbinary, though some may be nonbinary. Also see Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Transitioning
