Non-Interpersonal Trauma:

« Back to Glossary Index

Non-interpersonal trauma is caused by non-intentional acts or nonhuman forces: car accident, natural disaster, serious injuries or illness, witnessing a violent event not directly involving us, the effects of war. Like interpersonal trauma (abuse, violence, or neglect by others), non-interpersonal trauma can be associated with depression, PTSD, and distress intolerance — and puts us at increased risk for subsequent interpersonal trauma
