Neurotic Narcissism:
« Back to Glossary IndexNeurotic narcissism is a subtype of grandiose narcissism, showing strong negative emotions, heightened self-consciousness, and a tendency to react intensely to feedback that’s neither admiration nor praise. They often struggling with shame and vulnerability. Neuroticism is a term that has largely been replaced by more specific mental health terms, but here it’s used to describe a narcissistic personality trait that combines both negative emotions (anxiety, sadness, worry) and traits (inflated sense of self-importance, need for excessive attention/admiration, lack of empathy). The result is seen in individuals who are:
- Highly self-conscious and constantly aware of how they’re perceived by others.
- Vulnerable to criticism and react negatively to any feedback that isn’t praise or admiration.
- Prone to shame in response to perceived failures or shortcomings.
- Struggling with a fragile sense of self and identifying their own emotions and needs, which can lead to feelings of confusion and emptiness
