Neuroplasticity

« Back to Glossary Index

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change its structure and functioning in response to experience. It allows learning and adaptation, but can also encode the effects of chronic stress or repeated episodes of illness. In bipolar disorder, stress-related neuroplastic changes may strengthen pathways linked to heightened activation while weakening systems involved in inhibition and recovery, making mood shifts more intense or harder to regulate.
