« Back to Glossary IndexNeurodevelopmental disorders or conditions describe deficits during the developmental period, from infancy through adolescence. Brain functioning challenges emerge in very young children and can persist throughout their lifetimes. They can affect their emotions, behaviors, motor skills, memory, attention, ability to learn, ability to socialize, and ability to maintain self-control. They can be highly specific and limited or can overlap. Also see Neurobehavioral Disorders. Examples of neurodevelopmental conditions:
- Intellectual disabilities (ID), also called intellectual developmental disorder (IDD)
- Communication disorders affecting speech and language and developmental learning disorders
- Autism, ADHD, and Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Motor disorders, such as developmental coordination disorder, and Tourette’s Syndrome
