Neurobiological Changes

« Back to Glossary Index

Neurobiological changes in the physical functioning of the brain include how neurons communicate, how brain circuits regulate emotion and energy, and how chemical systems support stability and flexibility. These changes can be shaped by genetics, development, and life experiences such as chronic stress. In bipolar disorder, neurobiological changes may affect systems involved in mood regulation, reward sensitivity, and sleep–wake cycles, increasing vulnerability to mood episodes.
