Neurobehavioral or Neurodevelopmental Disorders:
« Back to Glossary IndexNeurobehavioral or neurodevelopmental disorders are often used interchangeably, but neurobehavioral is a broader term, encompassing conditions affecting a person’s brain and behavior beyond those occurring during the developmental period (from very young children through adolescents). Most causes are from traumatic brain injury (TBI), illness (strokes or dementia), genetic factors (autism, ADHD), environmental factors (exposure to toxins or drugs), developmental disorders (cerebral palsy, intellectual disability). Symptoms can include:
- Cognitive difficulties with attention, memory, learning, and decision-making. Also cognitive decline (dementia)
- Emotional dysregulation, mood swings, anxiety, depression, PTSD, aggression
- Motor impairments with movement, coordination, and balance
- Social and communication difficulties in relationships, understanding social cues, and expressing emotions
- Inhibitory control problems, such as impulsivity, low tolerance, irritability
