Narcissistic Projection:

« Back to Glossary Index

Narcissistic projection is a defense strategy that a narcissist uses to project a trait or behavior onto another person. It happens in any relationship but is more common between narcissists and empaths. Most people aren’t aware they’re doing it. And since narcissism is linked to lower emotional intelligence, someone with a narcissistic personality may not recognize it in themselves. For example: “You haven’t been doing much lately — what’s up with that?” Meanwhile, they haven’t helped with household chores in weeks, and you’ve had to pick up the slack. Or, when you tell them something they said was hurtful, they reply, “I can’t believe you’d say something like that to me right now. Do you ever think about my feelings?”
