Mood-Congruent Self-Schema:
« Back to Glossary IndexMood-congruent self-schema is the influence of our current emotional state on what aspects of our self-concept are most easy to access and focus attention on. When in a particular mood, our self-schema becomes biased toward accessing self-related memories and beliefs that are consistent with that emotion. If feeling depressed, we tend to remember past failures and negative experiences. Conversely, when feeling optimistic, we might recall our best achievements and positive self-perceptions. They can contribute to cognitive distortions, interpreting situations to be more negative than they are. Understanding this is a part of treating depression: identify patterns of negative self-talk and work to challenge them.
