Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs):

« Back to Glossary Index

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) — tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan) — are prescribed as antidepressants when other medicines haven’t worked. They can have serious side effects—though Selegiline (Emsam), an MAOI absorbed on the skin as a patch, may cause fewer side effects. Using a MAOI requires a strict diet because of dangerous or deadly interactions with foods that contain tyramine (some cheeses, pickles, wines) and some medicines (pain medicines, decongestants, certain herbal supplements). MAOIs can’t be combined with SSRIs or other medicines that increase serotonin.
