Mixed Nerves:

« Back to Glossary Index

Mixed nerves contain both sensory and motor nerve fibers that carry sensory information from sense organs to the central nervous system (CNS) and carry motor commands from the CNS to the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and to organs, muscles, and glands. All 31 pairs of spinal nerves are mixed nerves — transmitting impulses between the spinal cord and the rest of the body — and 4/12 cranial nerves are mixed nerves, including the vagus nerve.
