Mixed Mania:

« Back to Glossary Index

In mixed mania, also called mixed episodes, mixed affective state, or dysthymic bipolar disorder, a person can experience manic and depressive symptoms very quickly, one after the other, within the same hour or day. They can feel energized or have grandiose thoughts, while feeling sad, empty, hopeless, guilty, or suicidal. Or they can feel agitated, restless, and switched on, while feeling depressed. This is very taxing on individuals, who describe going through these mixed states as painful, stressful, and exhausting.
