Mindset:

« Back to Glossary Index

Mindset is our beliefs and assumptions about ourselves, lives, and the world in which we live. It can influence how we think, feel, and behave in a given situation. Mindsets can be helpful but can also lead to feeling inadequate, guilt, anxiety, and neglected. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck identified two basic mindsets:

  • Fixed mindset believes our abilities are fixed traits and can’t be changed, like believing talent and intelligence alone lead to success.
  • Growth mindset changes mindsets by challenging ourselves with new experiences and perspectives, learning and choosing to believe our characteristics are not predetermined
