Mindfulness:
« Back to Glossary IndexMindfulness is a non-judgmental acceptance and investigation of present experience, including body sensations, internal mental states, thoughts, emotions, impulses, and memories—to reduce suffering or distress and to increase wellbeing. Mindfulness meditation cultivates attention skills, develops emotional regulation, and reduces unhealthy rumination and worry. Mindfulness theory was developed by psychologist Daniel Goleman and neuroscientist Richard Davidson, who cowrote Altered Traits. Research shows:
- Benefits for mental and physical health, as well as athletic performance.
- Brainwaves of long-term meditators showed never-before-seen levels of gamma, a strong brain wave, which appears when different brain regions harmonize.
- Meditation boosts mental flexibility/focus, protecting against age-related cognitive decline.
- Direct link between nasal breathing and cognitive functions.
