Maladaptive Narcissism:
« Back to Glossary IndexMaladaptive narcissism’s number of extreme behaviors and traits is associated with pathological narcissism or narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), but without a pervasive pattern of behaviors affecting all areas of life. These maladaptive behaviors aren’t necessarily to the point of causing significant impairment — though they can still harm relationships, ability to self-regulate, and overall functioning. A person’s exaggerated self-confidence is accompanied by a lack of empathy and a tendency to manipulate others to get their way. (Also see Adaptive Narcissism) Maladaptive narcissism involves the following:
- Grandiose self-importance, exaggerated achievements/abilities, expecting special treatment.
- Negative self-centeredness or a tendency to exploit others.
- Entitlement, believing their superiority, deserving special privileges or favorable treatment, sometimes at others’ expense.
- Lack of empathy, not understanding/sharing others’ feelings, dismissing/ignoring their needs.
- Need for admiration, craving attention and validation from others to boost fragile self-esteem.
- Exploitative behavior of others to achieve own goals, no consideration for impact on others.
- Arrogant and haughty, acting superior and condescending towards others.
