Maladaptive Coping Mechanisms:

« Back to Glossary Index

Maladaptive coping strategies are when the person ignores a stressor or avoids thinking, feeling, or exploring potential solutions to their problem. This form of coping strategy is considered unhealthy because, in most cases, avoiding the situation does not eliminate or make the issue go away—and can lead to a worsening of psychological and physical conditions or disorders.
