Libidinal Energy:

« Back to Glossary Index

Libidinal energy, libido, or libidinal drive is psychic energy that drives behavior and motivation associated with sexual drive and pleasure. But it also encompasses desires for self-preservation and other forms of pleasure, fueling our instincts, creativity, and overall engagement with the world. Sigmund Freud viewed libido as the core of the life instinct (Eros), a driving force behind survival, pleasure, and reproduction. He considered it a fundamental, innate force present from birth, influencing various bodily functions and psychological development. In his theory, the libido is all sexual, associated with the id (primitive, unconscious part of personality), and its energy is channeled through different developmental stages (oral, anal, phallic, etc.). He wrote that libido can be expressed directly or sublimated into other activities, like creativity or intellectual pursuits. Carl Jung expanded the concept of libido, viewing it as a broader life force (or psychic energy) that drives all aspects of life, not just sexuality, and drives us to personal growth, creativity, and spiritual development.
