Language Processing:

« Back to Glossary Index

Language processing, within the neurocognitive system, is a complex set of cognitive/neural mechanisms so we understand, produce, and interpret language and others can understand us. It’s a multifaceted process encompassing levels of analysis: identifying sounds (phonology), understanding grammar (syntax), and interpreting meaning (semantics). It’s how we extract meaning and generate appropriate responses. Language processing is localized in brain regions within the left hemisphere, including Broca’s area (speech production) and Wernicke’s area (language comprehension), and mechanisms allowing interaction with other cognitive functions (attention, memory, working memory) to process effectively.
