Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP):

« Back to Glossary Index

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), also called ketamine infusion therapy, is an unconventional, promising treatment for depression and anxiety disorders not responding well to other therapies and medications. Ketamine’s primarily an anesthetic (for humans and animals) but is gaining traction as an antidepressant due to its rapid response as an analgesic and its hallucinogenic effects. Even after a first infusion, anxiety can improve. It’s also showing positive results for treating OCD, PTSD, and physical pain. Promising research:

  • How ketamine’s psychedelic effects work with antidepressants and psychotherapy to alter states of consciousness and lead to cognitive/behavioral change — to control harmful thought patterns.
  • On new yet undefined or evaluated antidepressant alternatives as treatment combinations, and how ketamine boosts brain neuroplasticity (adaptability in response to internal/external stimuli).
