Intrapsychic:

« Back to Glossary Index

Intrapsychic means occurring within our mind or personality—our psyche—encompassing psychological events, conflicts, impulses, beliefs, and ideas that are strictly internal, within our own mind. In therapy, addressing an intrapsychic issue means helping a patient resolve an internal conflict or change a personal belief system. Examples of intrapsychic phenomena:

  • Internalized beliefs, from their parents’ messages and values, leading to an internal struggle.
  • Inner conflict, between opposing emotions or wishes, like desire for love vs fear of vulnerability.
  • Self-reflection, with introspection about our feelings and motives
  • Emotional trauma internalized and continuing to affect one’s inner world. Anxiety unique to our thoughts, personal goal setting, and internal self-talk.
  • Unconscious motivations that generate conflicts, desires, or other psychological patterns.
