Traits may appear at birth, not until puberty, or in adults (after surgery or imaging tests). Intersex is distinct from sexual orientation and has the same range of gender identities as others. There are 1/100 intersex Americans or 2% of people worldwide. Some individuals choose gender affirmation. Some traits are genetic.
