« Back to Glossary IndexIntersectionality is a theory of social identities, particularly marginalized ones, influenced and shaped by race, class, ethnicity, sexual/gender identity/expression, mental/ physical disability, religion/creed/national origin — and their interlocking nature. The term was coined in 1989 by civil rights advocate/legal scholar Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, professor, Columbia Law School. Activists and academics use the intersectionality framework to promote social and political equality and oppose dealing with oppression and discrimination.
