Interpersonal Phenomena:

« Back to Glossary Index

Interpersonal phenomena are specific, observable events or outcomes occurring in a social context—the result of interpersonal dynamics (the ongoing processes that lead to a specific phenomenon). An example of this in terms of narcissism is the idealization and devaluation cycle, which is a predictable pattern of narcissistic behavior of love bombing a romantic partner and then systematically tearing them down. Other types:

  • Conflict: Disagreements from clashing opinions or competing interests.
  • Attraction: The positive feelings that draw two people together to form a relationship.
  • Social influence: The impact that one person’s attitudes or behaviors have on another.
  • Trust formation: The process by which individuals develop confidence and security in a relationship.
