Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) is a structured psychotherapy for bipolar disorder (BD) to improve mood states by understanding and working with biological and social rhythms. IPSRT helps individuals with BD adhere to their medication schedule, manage stressful life events and reduce disruptions in social rhythms, improve social support and relationships, and protect themselves against developing future episodes. Originally developed by Ellen Frank and colleagues, IPSRT is typically delivered in weekly sessions and is often used alongside pharmacotherapy. IPSRT integrates:

  • Social rhythm stabilization, which helps people build and maintain consistent daily routines to support circadian stability.
  • Interpersonal therapy (IPT) techniques. which address grief, role transitions, disputes, and interpersonal deficits.
