International Classification of Diseases (ICD):
« Back to Glossary IndexInternational classification of diseases-eleventh edition (ICD-11) is a classification system for mental and behavioral disorders used globally to record medical/psychiatric diagnoses. Its data inform decision-making in health policy. ICD has avoided limitations of DSM and Research Domain Criteria (RDoC). DSM products are expensive and lead to significant profits for the American Psychiatric Association (APA). ICD products are freely available across the globe, increasing utility to improve diagnosis and treatment. RDoC constructs are complex and best suited in academic research settings. ICD constructs are user-friendly and better suited for nonspecialists in primary-care settings across the world, representing viable, evidence-based solutions.
