Inhibitory Synapse:

« Back to Glossary Index

An inhibitory synapse prevents/suppresses a neuron from firing an action potential. Inhibitory synapses often use GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) as their primary neurotransmitter,  causing hyperpolarization (negative membrane potential) that makes it less likely to fire.
