Implicit motivation is an unconscious motivational disposition, or need, influencing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It’s acquired during early childhood and inferred from our behavior (based on non-verbal, affective experiences), in contrast to explicit motivation (conscious, cognitive, acquired after we develop language). Implicit motives determine which stimuli are affectively “hot,” orient behavior toward those stimuli, and energize behavior aimed at attaining (or avoiding) them. Implicit motives have been studied extensively, and research suggests they can predict leadership effectiveness, career outcomes, team orientation, and health issues. In narcissists, implicit motives are aimed at attaining social incentives and avoiding disincentives. Common implicit motives: 

  • Achievement is a desire to excel, master tasks, and accomplish goals. 
  • Affiliation is a need for close relationships, belonging, and social connection. 
  • Power is a desire to influence or control others, and to have an impact
