Imagery Rescripting (ImRs):
« Back to Glossary IndexImagery rescripting (ImRs) is a technique used in schema-focused therapy (SFT) to reprocess negative emotional memories and schemas by creating and altering mental images of challenging situations. (Schemas are mental shortcuts to interpreting, and filtering new information in relation to past experience and future anticipation.) Therapists guide patients to visualize painful childhood memories or recurring negative thoughts—and reimagine new positive outcomes (being rescued or comforted). ImRs helps modify memory-laden, negative meanings and emotions to create new, positive emotional experiences and reduce trauma-related intrusions. Also see Empty Chair Technique.
