Identity Disruption:

« Back to Glossary Index

Identity disruption is an umbrella term for identity disturbance, dissociative amnesia (severe memory gaps), dissociative identity disorder (two+ distinct identities and changed behavior/memory), identity crisis (psychosocial conflict about social role or loss of continuity in personality, typically during adolescence), and false identity (pretending to be someone else). The Identity Disruption Model suggests negative childhood experiences can lead to disrupted personal identity, increasing risk of body dysmorphia.
