Ideal-Self:
« Back to Glossary IndexThe ideal-self is a vision of our best possible self—the person we aspire to become, embodying our hopes, dreams, values, and desired qualities. Developed by humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers, ideal-self is integral to self-concept—how our self-esteem develops through experiences, parental/societal expectations, and personal growth. The gap between our ideal-self (who we aspire to be) and real-self (who we actually are) can make us feel inadequate, but can also motivate change and personal growth. An ideal self is how we set goals and benchmarks to check progress toward self-fulfillment. Also see True Self and False-Self.
