Hypothalamus

« Back to Glossary Index

Hypothalamus, deep in the brain, is command central to maintain body status quo — homeostasis — by directly influencing the autonomic nervous system and managing hormones. Nerve cells send chemical sensory signals to regulate body temp, blood pressure, hunger/thirst, weight/appetite, mood, sex drive, and sleep. The hypothalamus produces dopamine, the “feel-good” hormone/neurotransmitter. Hypothalamus damage affects physical/mental health. Underactivity worsens depression. Hyperactivity cause excessive anxiety.
