Hypervigilance:

« Back to Glossary Index

Hypervigilance is a state of abnormally heightened alertness, where an individual is constantly scanning their environment for signs of potential threats or danger, even when no real danger exists. They misinterpret benign situations as dangerous and can even catastrophize minor events. Hypervigilance is a natural survival mechanism that has gone into overdrive, leading to a persistent fight-or-flight state. It causes an increased startle response, like overreacting to sudden noises or movements. The constant state of high alert triggers the body’s stress response and can lead to severe anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, social isolation, and trust issues. Hypervigilance is not a standalone diagnosis but a symptom linked to mental and physical health conditions, typically arising from past trauma or chronic stress
