Hijras:
« Back to Glossary IndexHijras are a socio-religious group of people in South Asia who are often transgender women and intersex people (though not synonymous with transgender). Hijras are considered to be third gender, neither male nor female, but containing elements of both. They’re often born male but dress/look traditionally feminine. Many choose to undergo castration as an offering to Hindu goddess Bahuchara Mata. Hijras are also known for wearing glittering saris, applying heavy makeup, and dancing at temples.
