Healthy Narcissism:

« Back to Glossary Index

Healthy narcissism, also called adaptive narcissism, a somewhat debated term, is a balanced sense of self-worth, self-sufficiency, self-confidence, and resiliency — and the ability to set and achieve high ambitions without the need to exploit or demean others. As healthy narcissists, we love and value ourselves and can take pride in our achievements and talents, enjoying how that makes us feel. We can care and advocate for ourselves and sustain ourselves through setbacks and failure. Our pride doesn’t spillover into boasting or feeling superior to others. Perhaps most importantly, we’re able to empathize with others and have healthy relationships. Healthy is in the middle of the spectrum, with narcissism deficits (like echoism) on one end and pathological or extreme narcissism at the others. Healthy narcissism includes:

  • Positive self-view and feeling special without needing to diminish others allows us to pursue our goals with confidence and resilience.
  • Empathy and connection fosters fulfilling relationships and a sense of community.
  • Emotional resilience, helps us cope with setbacks and challenges while embracing our uniqueness.
