Gyrus:

« Back to Glossary Index

Gyrus, in neuroanatomy, is a ridge on the cerebral cortex, surrounded by sulci (depressions or furrows). Gyri and sulci create the brain’s folded appearance that create a larger surface area for human and other mammalian brains. Brain size is limited due to skull size, so larger cortical surface area gives rise to greater cognitive function.
