Glial Cells or Glia

« Back to Glossary Index

Glial cells or glia, also known as neuroglial cells: Glia support and protect nerve cells in the brain/spinal cord by holding them in place and helping them function. They also protect the brain from injury and disease and help maintain homeostasis. Glia form myelin, a fatty substance that insulates axons and allows electrical messages to travel faster. They also control neurotransmitter levels, provide metabolic support, and produce brain/spinal fluid. Glial cells outnumber nerve cells in the brain by a ratio of 3:1. Also see Nervous System
