« Back to Glossary IndexGiftedness is the ability to perform at a higher level than others of the same age, experience, or environment in one or more areas. Gifted individuals may have exceptional aptitude or competence in intellectual ability, academic aptitude, creative or productive thinking, leadership abilities, visual, musical, and performing arts, psychomotor abilities. They may also show advanced thinking and comprehension, emotional intensity, heightened sense of self awareness, highly developed curiosity, and excellent memory. Gifted students may require special provisions to meet their educational needs and benefit from opportunities to learn by self-discovery and exploration, and to socialize with peers. Gifted burnout is a state of mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion that can be caused by high expectations, academic pressure, and a mismatch between the child and their education.
