Gender Constructivism:

« Back to Glossary Index

Gender constructivism, or social construction of gender, replacing the outmoded gender essentialism theory, suggests gender is a social identity achieved through social interactions and performance—and there’s no inherent truth to it. Gender is socialized at birth and continues through family, education, peer groups, and mass media—and social expectations and interactions internalize gender norms so people behave accordingly. Gender is intertwined with intersectionality (multiple forms of identity/oppression, like race and class).
