Fa’afafine
« Back to Glossary IndexFa’afafine is a term unique to Samoan culture, concerning men who identify as female and are considered third gender. Fa’afafine translates to “in the manner of a woman.” Their femininity is recognized in early childhood—perhaps if they play with girls and avoid typically masculine activities. In families with too many sons and not enough daughters, parents may choose a son to help with “women’s” work and raise the son as a girl. Fa’afafine are respected for their work, strength, and ability to discuss taboo topics. They often care for the elderly, educate others about sex, and participate in beauty pageants, where proceeds go to charities for the elderly. Fa’afafine are different from lesbian and gay communities. Some may live entirely as women, while others may only adopt some feminine traits.
