Extrinsic

« Back to Glossary Index

Extrinsic encompasses external stimuli, but also factors beyond just the immediate physical environment, like context, expectations, or social cues influencing how sensory information is interpreted (sensory perception). In contrast, in the context of sensory stimulation, external means coming from the outside physical environment, like light, sound, touch, or temperature — or feeling pain from a bee sting.
