Explicit Motivations

« Back to Glossary Index

Explicit motivation refers to desires or goals we can easily summon and talk about, which reflect deliberate choices and conscious responses intentionally attuned to our self-concept, self-image, and social expectations (learned and reflect social influences). Explicit motives are often triggered by cognitive processes (decision-making, goal-setting, verbal stimuli), unlike implicit motivations (which are often unconscious, pre-verbal, and more related to spontaneous behaviors and emotional experiences). Explicit motives are typically assessed through self-report questionnaires or interviews, where individuals are asked about their goals, values, and motivations.
